어느덧 힙합을 접한 지도 10년이 훌쩍 넘었다. 그런 나에게 우탱 클랜(Wutang Clan)은 영원한 고향이다. 그래서일까, 인터뷰를 하는 데에 어떤 특별한 이유도 필요하지 않았다. 그냥 당연히 하는 것이고 해야 하는 것이었다. 우탱 클랜 멤버 중 2명에게 인터뷰 확답을 받았고 매쓰매틱스(Mathematics)가 먼저 답변을 보내왔다. 르자(Rza)와 함께 우탱 클랜의 음악을 책임져온 그 인물 말이다. 여담이지만, 인터뷰와 관련한 이야기를 주고 받는 과정에 있어 그가 보여준 깔끔한 매너에 감사한다. 역시 형들은 짱이다.   

리드머(이하 ‘리’): Thank you for this interview. Please introduce yourself briefly to your Korean fans.
우선 인터뷰에 응해줘서 고맙다. 반가워할 한국 팬들에게 간단한 자기 소개를 부탁한다.

Mathematics(이하 ‘Mathe’): Peace Mathematics here Wu-Tang Clans official D.J. and one of it's Producers.
Peace. 우탱 클랜(Wutang Clan)의 공식 DJ이자 프로듀서인 매쓰매틱스(Mathematics)다.

리: Can you tell us the significance of your name "Mathematics"?
매쓰매틱스라는 이름을 짓게 된 이유가 궁금하다.

Mathe: Mathematics are principles of life which i live by such as 1+2=3, knowledge + wisdom = understanding, and musically for me it just all adds up.
매쓰매틱스는 ‘1+2=3’, ‘지식+지혜=이해’처럼 내 삶의 주된 방식을 가리킨다. 음악적으로 그것들이 전부 합쳐졌다는 뜻으로 보면 된다.
 
리: I heard that your brother led you to hiphop. How did you first get to do it?
형제에 의해 처음 힙합을 접한 것으로 알고 있다. 당시에 대해 간략히 설명해준다면?

Mathe: Actually i had a lot of older brothers and sisters and they listened to it and i was attracted to it, but one of my brothers did help me in assisting me in getting my first set of turntables.
그렇다. 나에겐 많은 형제자매가 있었고 그들은 힙합을 즐겨 들었다. 나 역시 자연스레 힙합에 빠져들게 되었고, 그 중 한 명의 도움으로 턴테이블 세트를 갖출 수 있었다.

리: You started DJing in the late 80s. Must have been a lot to experience for a young man.
80년대 후반부터 디제잉을 시작한 것으로 아는데, 어린 나이에 많은 경험을 했을 것 같다.

Mathe: hip hop was fun then and was a great experience for me in those days.
그 당시 힙합은 나에게 매우 재미있는 것이었고 동시에 훌륭한 경험이었다.

리: What triggered you to join Wu-Tang Clan? Was it because of Gza?
우탱 클랜에 들어가게 된 계기가 궁금하다. 알려진 대로 즈자(Gza)와 인연 덕분인가?

Mathe: Wu-tang for me was not something that i joined, it just happened naturally for me, i started out d.j.'n for Gza and i also created the Wu-tang logo.
우탱 클랜에 정식으로 가입했다기보다는 그냥 자연스럽게 함께하게 되었다고 보는 게 맞을 것 같다. 나는 즈자의 DJ로 일했고 우탱 클랜의 로고를 직접 제작했다.

리: How did you get to do producing from djing? Did Rza help you learn how to do it?
디제잉을 하다가 프로듀싱을 시작하게 된 계기는? 르자(Rza)가 당신의 스승인가?

Mathe: i saw Rza make a beat which later turned out to be the song "ice cream" that's what made me wanna produce, but in reality no one can teach you how to produce that's something you have to learn to do on your own, it has to be in you.
르자가 비트를 만드는 모습을 지켜본 적이 있었다. 그 곡은 훗날 “Ice Cream” (주: 래퀀(Raekwon)의 솔로 앨범 [Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..] 수록곡)으로 완성되었는데, 이것이 내 마음 속에 프로듀싱을 하고 싶다는 욕구를 일으켰다. 그러나 실제로는 누구도 프로듀싱을 가르쳐주지는 않는다. 자신만의 것을 스스로 만들어가야 한다.

리: When we listen to your beat, we can find similar parts from Rza, but obviously, it’s different. Can you tell us how you guys share the differences from the musical point of view?
당신의 비트를 들어보면 물론 르자와 유사한 점도 있지만 차이 역시 분명히 존재하는 느낌이다. 스스로 르자와 자신의 음악적 차이에 대해 말해준다면?

Mathe: We come from the same era of music and we share a love for the same type of music but being 2 different individuals you get different sounds.
우리는 같은 시절에 음악을 시작한 사람이고 같은 스타일의 음악을 좋아하지만, 동시에 당신이 느낀 것처럼 각자의 다른 사운드를 가지고 있다. 

리: Your beat can be found among all the great albums, like, Wu Tang albums, the members’ solo albums, and other Wu family albums. You’ve worked Rza and Tru Master for a long time and created the dope beats, and whenever I listened to them, it makes my heart beat fast. I like “Shaolin Worldwide”, “Wu Banga 101”, “Rules”, and “Stick Me for My Riches”. How about you? What is your personal favorite?
우탱 클랜 앨범, 멤버들의 솔로 앨범, 그 외 우탱 패밀리의 앨범 등 수많은 역작에서 당신의 비트를 들을 수 있다. 오랜 세월 동안 르자, 트루 마스터(Tru Master) 등과 함께 당신이 만들어온 돕 비트들은 언제 들어도 가슴이 벅차다. 개인적으로 가장 애착이 가는 곡이나 최고의 곡을 꼽는다면? 참고로 나는 “Shaolin Worldwide”, “Wu Banga 101”, “Rules”, “Stick Me for My Riches” 등을 좋아한다.

Mathe: Cobra clutch has always been one of my favorites, and i got some new ones coming that i am really loving.
가장 좋아하는 곡 중 하나는 “Cobra clutch”(주: 우탱 클랜의 컴필 앨범 [Wu-Tang Killa Bees: The Swarm] 수록곡)다. 그리고 나는 진짜 맘에 드는 몇 곡을 곧 발표할 계획이다.

리: Surely there’s Rza in the core of Wu Tang Clan’s musical originality, but after some point when Rza went into somewhat abstruse way I’ve enjoyed your beat more. While Rza is experimenting this and that, it seems like that you commit yourself to hiphop groove. Do you agree?
물론 우탱 클랜의 음악적 오리지날리티의 핵심에는 르자가 있겠지만 르자가 어느 순간 다소 난해한 길로 들어서면서 나는 당신의 비트를 더 즐겼던 것 같다. 르자가 이것저것 실험해보는 걸 즐긴다면, 당신은 힙합 본연의 그루브에 충실한 느낌이다. 이에 동의하는가?

Mathe: well for me the type of music that i make for my wu-tang brothers is easy, i feel "stick me for my riches" was an experiment for me, i'm just committed to make good music.
지금껏 우탱 클랜 형제들을 위해 내가 만들어온 음악 스타일에 대해 별로 부담을 느낀 적은 없다. 다만 “Stick Me for My Riches”는 조금 실험적인 곡이었다. 나는 그저 좋은 음악을 만들기 위해 노력할 뿐이다.

리: When you listen to the solo album [Love Hell Or Right] and [The Problem], it feels like experimental, that you tried something more that you wanted to do. Would you explain a little bit about the albums?
솔로 앨범 [Love Hell Or Right], [The Problem] 등을 들어보면 조금 더 본인이 하고 싶은 것을 시도해본 느낌이 난다. 이 앨범들에 대해 간략히 설명해준다면?

Mathe: I'm always experimenting i really don't want to be locked into one sound, i look at a producer like Dr. Dre who always reinvents himself but still keeps his signature sound.
나는 항상 하나의 사운드에 갇히지 않기 위해 노력하고 실험한다. 자기 고유의 사운드는 유지하면서도 끊임없이 새로움을 추구하는 닥터 드레(Dr. Dre)처럼 말이다.

리: I think [Mathematics Presents Wu-Tang Clan & Friends Unreleased]and [Return of the Wu & Friends] were good presents for Wu Tang fans. Are you planning to make more compilatory albums like these?
[Mathematics Presents Wu-Tang Clan & Friends Unreleased], [Return of the Wu & Friends] 등을 발표했다. 우탱 마니아들에게 좋은 선물이라고 생각한다. 앞으로도 지속적으로 이런 컴필 앨범을 발표할 계획이 있는가?

Mathe: I stay working so of course that's always a possibility.
나는 항상 작업 중이므로 그럴 가능성은 언제나 있다.

리: You’ve worked on the music from TV Show ‘Wanda At Large’, right? Can you tell us about what made you do the job and how it was?
TV Show ‘Wanda At Large’의 음악 작업도 했던 걸로 안다. 작업 계기와 과정이 궁금하다.

Mathe: Wanda was a fan of Wu-tang and my work and i was a fan of her comedy so working with her was a pleasure and a great oppurtunity.
완다(Wanda)는 우탱 클랜과 나의 팬이었고 나 역시 그녀의 코미디를 좋아했다. 따라서 우리는 즐겁게 작업했고 그것은 내게 좋은 기회였다.

리: It might be difficult to answer, but what do you think is the best MC in Wu Tang Clan?
대답하기 어렵겠지만, 당신이 생각하는 우탱 클랜 내 최고의 MC는?

Mathe: You tell me who you think the best MC in Wu-tang is..
당신이 내게 직접 말해달라.

리: I think [OB4CL2] has been some sort of motivation. Did the album’s success make any impact on you?
[Only Built 4 Cuban Links..Pt.2]의 성공이 혹시 당신에게 미친 영향이 있다면?

Mathe: It was a great album and i was happy and proud of my brother Raekwon, it was motivation, but good music for me is always motivation!
위대한 앨범을 발표한 내 형제 래퀀이 자랑스럽고 기쁘다. 그것은 분명 동기부여를 해주었다. 물론 좋은 음악은 언제나 내게 자극이 된다!

리: Can you tell us more about Ol’ Dirty Bastard? We all miss him. (RIP ODB) Tiger JK, Korean MC, looked back upon the memory of him and did ODB’s rap style in his song “Monster” which Rakaa Iriscience and Rakim participated.
올 더티 바스타드(Ol' Dirty Bastard)에 대해 말해줄 수 있는가? 우리 모두 아직도 그의 죽음을 애도하고 있다. 한국의 MC 타이거 제이케이(Tiger JK)는 라카(Rakaa Iriscience)와 라킴(Rakim)이 참여한 자신의 곡 “Monster”에서 ODB를 추모하는 의미에서 그의 랩 스타일을 오마쥬하기도 했다.

Mathe: Honestly there's not much more to tell, Old Dirty never hid nothing from his fans that's what made him unique.
솔직히 말하면, 딱히 더 할 이야기는 없다. ODB는 자신의 모든 걸 숨기지 않는 스타일이었고 그런 점이 그를 더 특별하게 했다.

리: What was the most memorable event? Any fun story or episode while working as Wu Tang Clan? Fans would like to hear some ordinary, everyday story about you guys.

우탱 클랜의 MC들과 작업하며 가장 인상 깊었던 기억이나 일화가 있다면? 시시콜콜한 이야기라도 좋다. 팬들은 그런 걸 더 원하니까.

Mathe: They should look out for the Gza's movie he's doing on Wu-tang he has all kinds of behind the scene footage from way back, probably from the beginning of Wu.
우탱 클랜 멤버들은 즈자의 녹화테이프를 조심해야할 것이다. 그 안에는 우탱 클랜의 시작부터 지금까지의 모든 장면(behind the scene )이 담겨 있으니까.

리: As far as we know, you are djing with Method Man and Redman exclusively, going on a tour together. Any plan to visit Korea? You know Rza did a performance in Korea several years ago.
현재 메쏘드 맨(Method Man)과 레드 맨(Redman)의 전담 DJ로서, 함께 투어를 다니는 중으로 알고 있다. 한국에 올 생각은 없는가? 참고로 르자는 몇 년 전 한국에서 공연한 적이 있다.

Mathe: right now Korea's not on the schedule but i would love to do it because i never been, and no i did not know Rza did a show in Korea.
지금으로선 한국은 투어 스케줄에 포함되어 있지 않다. 하지만 나는 한국에 한 번도 가보지 않았기에 한국에서 공연하고 싶다. 그리고 르자가 한국에서 공연한 사실은 몰랐다.

리: Have you heard about Korea? Have you listened to any Korean hiphop?
한국을 알고 있었나? 한국 힙합 음악을 들어본 적이 있는지 궁금하다.

Mathe: Actually no i have not had a chance to hear any Korean hip hop, if you can send me some
솔직히 말하면, 한국 힙합음악을 들어본 적이 없다. 내게 좀 보내달라(주: 그래서 나는 몇몇 한국힙합을 매쓰매틱스에게 보내준 상태다).

리: Which do you prefer Method Man’s ‘Ticaaawwwuull’ or Redman’s ‘Funnkk Doccc!!!’? 
메쏘드 맨(Method Man)의 ‘Ticaaawwwuull’과 레드맨(Redman)의 ‘Funnkk Doccc!!!’ 중 어느 것을 선호하나?(웃음)

Mathe: Method Man's Tical, but Funk Doc rock's as well
메쏘드 맨의 ‘Ticaaawwwuull’이 더 좋다. 하지만 레드맨의 ‘Funnkk Doccc!!!’도 썩 괜찮다.

리: What does Wu Tang Clan’s existence mean in your life?
당신의 인생에 있어 우탱 클랜의 존재는?

Mathe: I am wu-tang and that's forever, that was stapled in when i created the logo.
나 자신이 곧 우탱 클랜이고 이는 영원할 것이다. 그것은 내가 우탱 클랜의 로고를 만들 때 이미 정해진 운명이었다.

리: Do you think Souljaboy and other guys are ruining hiphop?
솔자보이(Souljaboy) 등이 힙합을 망친다고 생각하나?

Mathe: Hip hop is too big for anyone to ruin it, Soulja boy is just holding down his form of music which originated in the south, every type of music has an audience and hip hop is more diverse than ever.
한 개인이 힙합을 망치기엔 힙합은 너무 커졌다. 솔자보이는 그저 사우스(south) 스타일에 기반을 둔 자신의 음악을 하고 있을 뿐이다. 모든 장르의 음악은 그들의 팬을 보유하고 있고, 힙합은 그 어떤 장르보다 다양성을 갖춘 음악이다.

리: As a musician, how do you want to be remembered, in the history or for listeners?
리스너에게, 혹은 역사에 어떤 뮤지션으로 기억되고 싶나?

Mathe: I would like to be remembered for making good music and appreciated, that'll be kool.
좋은 음악을 만들어주어 고마운 뮤지션으로 남는다면 멋지겠다.

리: What are your plans in the future?
앞으로 계획이 궁금하다.

Mathe: More albums, i have an album im about to release with my artist "Eyes-Low" it features Redman and some of my other wu brothers, and trust me it's incredible!
아이즈-로우(Eyes-Low)라는 뮤지션의 앨범을 제작 중이다. 레드맨과 다른 우탱 클랜 멤버들이 참여할 것이다. 굉장한 작품이다. 믿어도 좋다!
