10년 전 피아노, 드럼, 베이스 등 모든 악기의 연주와 녹음과정을 혼자만의 힘으로 해내고 이른바 "라이브 힙합 솔로 앨범"을 표방하며 힙합 씬에 등장했던 이가 있었다. 데뷔 앨범 [Pre-life Crisis]를 시작으로 10여 년의 세월동안 힙합 씬에 머물며 이제는 한국의 리스너들에게도 자주 언급되는 다재다능한 뮤지션, 카운트베이스디(Count Bass D)가 바로 그 주인공이다. 국내에도 많은 마니아를 거느리고 있는 그는 참 온화한 힙합음악을 들려주는 아티스트다. 그리고 음악만큼이나 음악과 가족을 향한 마음이 따뜻한 한 남자이기도 하다. 그렇다. 이번에 리드머에서 독점 인터뷰의 주인공으로 점찍은 외국 뮤지션은 바로 내쉬빌을 대표하는 힙합뮤지션, 카운트베이스디다!

Rhythmer(이하 ‘R') : First of all, we want thank you for accepting this interview. How did you feel when we first contacted you? Also please say hello to your Korean fans.
먼저 이렇게 인터뷰에 응해 주어서 영광스럽게 생각한다. 처음 우리로부터 인터뷰 제의를 받고 어떠한 기분이 들었는지 궁금하다. 그리고 팬들에게 인사 부탁한다.

Count Bass D(이하 ‘Bass D') : I feel thankful that my music is internationally known. Thank you Korea for your support of my art.
내 음악이 세계적으로 알려진 것 같아 무척 기분이 좋다. 내 음악을 좋아하는 한국 팬들에게 감사한다.

R : You have versatile musical talents as a producer, rapper, session and etc. When did you first start your music career and do you have some special occasion for that?
프로듀서, 래퍼, 세션 등 당신은 음악적으로 다재다능하다는 것을 알고 있다. 음악은 언제 시작하였고, 시작한 특별한 계기가 있다면 어떠한 일이었는가?

Bass D : I started my professional career in music in 1992. I try to celebrate everyday that I still can make music for a living.
1992년에 본격적으로 음악을 시작했다. 음악을 본업으로 삼을 수 있다는 축복을 매일 기념하며 살고 있다.

R : [Dwight Spitz] has special meanings among Korean fans because they first noticed you with that album, and by far it is the most popular album in Korea. Tell us your impression about this fact and do you have any joyful memories you gained during the making of the album that you want to share with us?
당신의 앨범 중에서도 [Dwight Spitz]는 국내에선 특별한 의미를 갖는데, 그 이유는 당신을 국내에 알리는 가장 큰 역할을 함과 동시에 가장 잘 알려진 앨범이기 때문이다. 이에 대한 생각과 이 앨범을 작업하면서 재미있는 기억은 없는가?

Bass D : Dwight Spitz is an album that exposed my work to many new listeners. My sound involved many more instruments than just a sampler up until I created that time. I believe many people were excited to hear traditional Hiphop music from me. My family struggles very hard financially so that I can make music for a living. At that time and there were not too many joyful memories to speak of, but my third child Kush was born while I was making that record and I believe that was my motivation to keep creating.
[Dwight Spitz]는 나에 대해 잘 모르던 많은 리스너에게 나를 알린 앨범이다. 그 당시 샘플러로 만든 음악보다 더 많은 악기가 동원되었다. 많은 사람들이 나에게서 전통적인 스타일의 힙합을 듣게 되어 흥분했을 것이다. 우리 가족은 경제적으로 매우 힘든 상황이었기 때문에 내가 음악으로 생계를 유지할 수밖에 없었다. 그래서 그 당시에 좋았던 기억은 별로 없지만 앨범 작업 중에 셋째 아이인 Kush가 태어났고 그것 때문에 더욱 열심히 작업했던 것 같다.

R : [Pre-life Crisis] should be very meaningful to you since it is your first release. However there would be some afflictions and regrets. Can you tell us your thoughts about your first album? and how you overcame the afflictions.
[Pre-life Crisis]는 음악적으로나 당신의 첫 앨범이라는 점으로 보나 상당히 의미 있는 작품임과 동시에 많은 아픔을 준 앨범이기도 하다. 첫 앨범에 대한 소감과 당시 시련을 어떻게 극복할 수 있었는지에 대해 이야기 부탁한다.

Bass D : My first album was written before I was 21 years old. My perspective on life was short. As I grew older and started a family I learned to move toward a positive direction with my music. I haven't fully gotten there yet, but I'm well on my way.
첫 앨범은 내가 21살이 되기 전에 만든 것이다. 그때는 인생이 뭔지 잘 몰랐다. 나이가 들고 가족이 생기면서 음악을 통해 긍정적인 길로 나아가는 법을 배웠다. 아직 그곳에 도착하진 않았지만, 꾸준히 나아가고 있는 중이다.

R : What are you currently working on?
현재는 어떠한 음악 작업을 하고 있는가?

Bass D : Currently I'm working on staying alive and feeding my family. Selling music for a living is getting harder for me because even though people say they enjoy the music, the temptation to get it for free is too great.
살아서 가족을 먹여 살리는 것에 힘쓰고 있다. 음악을 직업으로 삼는 것은 갈수록 어려워지고 있다. 왜냐하면 사람들은 음악을 즐긴다고 하면서도 불법복제에 대한 유혹을 떨치지 못하기 때문이다.

R : What did you focus on during the making of your recent release [Act Your Waist Size]?
최근 발표한 [Act Your Waist Size]앨범에선 어떠한 부분에 중점을 두고 작업하였는가?

Bass D : I focused on making the best album I could make given the gifts that GOD has given me. I wanted to create an album that would not get old after many listens.
하느님이 나에게 주신 선물을 바탕으로 최대한 훌륭한 앨범을 만드는 것에 주력했다. 여러 번 들어도 질리지 않는 앨범을 만들고 싶었다.

R : We presume that you didn't work with other musicians that much. Recently you worked with Van Hunt and previously with J. Rawls, how did you get to work with them?
이때까지 다른 뮤지션과의 교류는 그리 많지 않았던 것 같다. 그런 가운데에 교류한, 최근 Van Hunt나 이 전 J. Rawls 와의 작업은 어떻게 이루어진 것인지 궁금한데….

Bass D : I've known both Van Hunt and J. Rawls for a few years and we've been looking for the best opportunity to create music together ever since we met.
반헌트(Van Hunt)와 제이롤스(J. Rawls)와는 몇 년 전부터 알고 지내던 사이였다. 처음 만났을 때부터 같이 작업하길 기대하고 있었다.

R : Who are your fellow musicians? (Also tell us about the relationship with your friend MF Doom too.)
친분이 있는 뮤지션은 누구인가? (친분이 두텁다는 MF DOOM과의 인연도 같이 알려주면 좋겠다)

Bass D : I don't have a crew I hang out with. I only have time for my family because it is so large. DOOM hires me from time to time to do work for him. He's work inspires me and I am grateful for how much knowledge and exposure I have gained from working with him.
같이 다니는 크루는 없다. 가족이 많기 때문에 다른 사람과 어울릴 형편이 못된다. 엠에프둠(MF Doom)은 이따금 나를 불러 일거리를 준다. 그의 음악은 항상 나에게 영감을 불어넣어 주고 그와 함께 작업함으로써 경험을 쌓고 이름을 알리게 되어 무척 감사하게 생각하고 있다.

R : Are there any special reasons why musicians occasionally release Japan-exclusive albums? We remember you mentioning at some interview that your experiences in Japan affected you personally and musically. Please tell us more about this.
일본에서만 앨범을 발매한 경우가 있는데, 특별한 이유가 있는가? 어느 인터뷰에서 당신은 일본에서의 경험이 당신 자신과 음악적으로 큰 영향을 주었다고도 들었는데, 이 부분에 대해서도 자세히 설명 부탁한다.

Bass D : It seems as if Japan seeks to release albums by musicians they respect first. I am thankful to have been one of those musicians. When I visited Japan two years ago I was moved by the number of people who appreciated my work. As a result, the experience continues to motivate me to make more quality music.
일본에서는 그들이 존중하는 뮤지션들의 앨범을 우선적으로 발매하는 경향이 있는 것 같다. 내가 그러한 뮤지션 중 한 명으로 대우받는 것 같아 기분이 좋다. 2년 전 일본에 갔을 때 나의 음악을 즐기는 사람들을 보고 감동했었다. 그러한 경험이 더 나은 음악을 만드는 자극제로 작용하고 있다.

R : We receive warm and charming impressions from your music. Where does that sense come from?
당신의 음악에선 참 따뜻하고 아름다운 느낌을 많이 받는다. 이런 당신의 감성은 어디서 오는 것인가?

Bass D : I aim to be a pleasant and peaceful person to everyone I come in contact with. I hope that will come acrossed to everyone who hears my music.
나는 사람들을 만날 때 유쾌하고 온화한 분위기를 풍기려고 노력한다. 사람들이 그러한 느낌을 내 음악에서도 느꼈으면 좋겠다.

R : Please tell us your best 'Count Bass D' song. Or songs that hold special memories.
여태껏 당신이 만든 곡 중에서 가장 애착이 가는 곡이거나 특별한 추억이 얽인 곡이 있다면 소개 바란다.

Bass D : "7 Years" holds special memories because my wife has given me so much and being able to write a song for her that has become my most popular song in Asia is very special to me.
"7 Years"가 가장 특별하다. 나에게 항상 많은 것을 베푼 아내를 위해 쓴 곡이 아시아에서 가장 유명해 졌다는 사실은 나에게도 상당히 큰 의미가 있다.

R : Please tell us about your sons and daughters. What kind of father are you?
당신의 자녀들에 대해서 이야기 해 달라. 당신은 어떠한 아빠인가?

Bass D : I have 1 daughter and 3 sons and one more child due January 8th. I am a father who is trying to provide the best quality of life for my children. I must improve myself daily to do this.
나는 딸 한 명과 아들 세 명이 있다. 그리고 1월 8일경에 또 다른 아이가 태어날 예정이다. 나는 내 아이들에게 가장 좋은 것만 해주고 싶은 아빠이다. 그러기 위해선 매일 매일 노력해야 할 것 같다.

R : Nowadays Hiphop music comprehends many different types of music. One Korean musician said that Hiphop is a genre with broad comprehensions. In your opinion, what could be the merit of Hiphop?
오늘 날 힙합은 음악적으로 참 다양한 장르를 포괄한다. 국내 어느 뮤지션은 그만큼 힙합이 포용력이 넓은 장르라고 말하던데, 당신이 생각하는 힙합의 장점은 무엇이라고 생각 하는가?

Bass D : Hiphop is an culture that came from nothing. That is why I identify with Hiphop.
힙합은 無에서 창조된 문화이다. 내가 힙합을 하는 이유도 여기에 있다.

R : We think it is important for a musician to have his own originality. How do you think about that?
특히 음악을 창작하는 이에겐 무엇보다 자신만의 특정한 음악적 색깔을 가지는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다. 이에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는가?

Bass D : It's important for me. I am influenced by many artists but I attempt to take what I learn from watching others and apply it to what I do naturally. Originality is what I was taught Hiphop was all about when I was young.
나도 중요하게 생각한다. 나는 여러 아티스트에게 영향을 받았지만 그들에게서 배운 것을 내 특유의 스타일에 적용하기 위해 노력한다. 독창성은 힙합의 모든 것이라고 어렸을 때 배웠다.

R : Who could be your musical role model?
당신에게 롤 모델이 되어준 음악인이 있다면 누구인가?

Bass D : GOD is my musical role model. I've been making music before 1978 when rap music started. I started playing gospel music in church first. Gospel music is more challenging for me than any other genre of music I have ever made.
하느님이 나의 음악적 롤 모델이다. 나는 랩 음악이 탄생한 1978년 이전부터 음악을 해왔다. 맨 처음에는 교회에서 가스펠 음악을 연주했고. 가스펠은 내가 여태까지 시도한 장르 중 개인적으로 가장 어려운 음악이었다.

R : Where do you get inspirations from? (besides music.)
음악 외적으로 영감을 받는 것이 있다면 무엇이 있는가?

Bass D : Mainly from my family and from the Hammond organ players in churches around this country.
보통 가족과 교회의 해몬드 오르간 연주자들로부터 영감을 받는다.

R : How do you mostly spend your time when you are not making music?
음악 작업을 하지 않을 때는 주로 무엇을 하며 보내는지 궁금하다.

Bass D : I spend most of my time taking care of my family. Whatever time is left is what I have for music.
난 가족을 돌보면서 대부분의 시간을 보낸다. 남는 시간엔 음악 작업을 한다.

R : What makes people enjoy your music?
사람들이 당신과 당신의 음악을 주목하고 듣는 이유는 무엇이라고 생각하는가?

Bass D : I'm not sure what makes people enjoy my music, but I hope people who hear my music appreciate the fact that I am trying to make the best music I can.
정확한 이유는 잘 모르겠지만, 내가 최선을 다해서 음악을 만든다는 사실을 팬들이 높이 사는 것으로 믿고 싶다.

R : How much confidence do you have in your music? Also, are you going to keep live your life as a musician?
자신의 음악에 대해서 얼마만큼 자신을 가지고 있는가. 그리고 음악인으로서의 삶을 계속 할 것인가?

Bass D : I have confidence in my music, I do not have confidence in the business of selling music in the 21st century. The listeners will determine how long Count Bass D will make music for the public by purchasing my material or donating to my website. If I can not support my family making music I will have to figure out something else to do with my life. But that will be hard because I've been making music for nearly 30 years and I have no idea what else I do well.
나는 내 음악에 자신이 있다. 하지만, 21세기에서 음악을 파는 상업적인 측면엔 자신이 없다. 내가 앞으로 얼마나 오랫동안 음악을 하느냐는 리스너들이 나의 앨범을 얼마나 구입하고 웹사이트를 통해 얼마나 기부하느냐에 달려있다. 만약 내가 음악으로 더는 가족을 부양할 수 없게 된다면 다른 직업을 찾아봐야 할 것이다. 하지만 그것은 무척이나 힘들 것이다. 나는 30년간 오직 음악만 만들어왔기 때문에 그것 외에 할 줄 아는 것이 없다.

R : What could be your greatest pleasure that you gain from music?
음악으로부터 얻는 가장 큰 기쁨은 무엇인가?

Bass D : The music itself is the greatest pleasure. Being able to provide a comfortable life for my family through making music is the only thing I wish to gain outside of that.
음악 그 자체가 가장 큰 기쁨이다. 음악을 통해 가족에게 편의를 제공하는 것이 내가 음악을 통해 얻고 싶은 모든 것이다.

R : Please recommend us some Hiphop records.
우리에게 추천해 주고 싶은 힙합 앨범이 있다면 소개해 주기 바란다.

Bass D : I recommend you listen to any artist willing to treat you with respect. Listen to the Hiphop artists who are willing to say thank you for the support you give them and take the time to answer your questions. My opinion says if you listen to Count Bass D music, you have great taste in Hiphop.
당신에게 존중을 표하는 아티스트를 들을 것을 추천한다. 당신의 지지에 감사해 하고 물음에 세세히 답변하는 힙합 아티스트의 음악을 들으라. 개인적으로 카운트베이스디(Count Bass D)를 듣는 리스너라면 힙합에 대한 탁월한 센스를 가졌다고 생각한다.

R : Have you ever listened to Korean Hiphop? (If not, we can introduce you some nice musicians.) There are many Korean musicians who wish to make a collabo with you. How do you feel about that and what do you think about working with them?
혹 한국의 힙합 음악을 들어 본 적이 있는가? (없다면 우리 리드머에서 좋은 뮤지션들을 소개해 주겠다). 정말 바람으로 당신과 국내 뮤지션의 콜라보레이션을 꿈꾸고 있기도 한데 어떤가? 같이 작업 할 의향은 있는가?

Bass D : I have only heard a few artists from Korea in passing. I would love to learn about more Korean artists and work with them. I enjoy learning about cultures other than my own. Most people would be surprised how easy it is to work with me on a musical level. As long as we connect on a musical level, cultural differences never get in the way of good sounds.
한국 음악은 아주 조금만 들어봤다. 한국 아티스트에 대해 알고 싶고 또 같이 작업도 해보고 싶다. 나는 다른 문화를 배우는 것을 좋아한다. (문화와 언어가 달라도) 나와 음악적인 관계를 맺는 것이 얼마나 쉬운 일인지 알게 되면 놀랄 것이다. 음악적인 연결고리만 있다면 문화적 차이는 좋은 음악을 만드는 데에 전혀 걸림돌이 되지 않는다.

R : In Korea, there are many beat makers, rappers and performers who dream of becoming musicians. Please give them some advices.
국내에도 정말 많은 이들이 힙합 비트를 만들고, 랩을 하고 악기를 연주하는 등 음악인의 삶을 꿈꾸고 있다. 이런 그들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있다면 한 마디 부탁한다.

Bass D : Unless music is the only thing you have the ability to do, do something else and keep music as your hobby. Many people involved in the music industry are not professional. Your family and those you love can be hurt by what you go through as a musician. The music will always be there for you unless you let the business side of music make you bitter about music in general.
음악이 당신의 유일무이한 길이 아니라면 다른 것을 하고 취미로만 즐겨라. 음악계에 몸담고 있는 많은 이들은 프로가 아니다. 뮤지션의 길을 걷다보면 당신의 가족이나 친구들은 힘든 시기를 겪을 수 있다. 음악의 상업적인 측면이 당신의 음악관 전체를 뒤엎지 않는 이상 음악은 항상 당신 곁에 있을 것이다.

R : Please tell us about your future plans.
앞으로 계획에 대해서 이야기해 달라.

Bass D : I plan to stay alive and feed my family. Life is honestly that simple to me. Music has always been a part of my life so I'm sure that will remain, but I'm only focused on taking care of my family and being the best father and husband I can be. Music isn't as hard for me as being a father and husband is.
계속 살아서 가족을 부양하는 것이 내 계획이다. 내 인생의 목표는 이렇듯 간단하다. 음악은 항상 내 삶의 일부분이었기 때문에 음악 활동은 계속할 것이다. 하지만 내 인생은 가족을 돌보며 최고의 아버지와 남편이 되는 것에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 좋은 음악인이 되는 것보다 좋은 아빠와 남편이 되는 것이 훨씬 힘들다.
